Daytripper by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon

Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba are fantastic.  I have loved their comic illustrations from the day I first eyed them and have previously posted on them on our old art blog.  However I have never read anything by them so I was very excited to give Daytripper a go to see if their writing style was as enjoyable as their art.

Daytripper is a non linear highlight of events occurring in the life of one man, Brás de Oliva Domingos, an obituary writer who has to constantly think about death. It is told in traditional comic form with an occasional narrator.
Each chapter shows one life memory or event and what did happen along with what could have happened. Brás imagines how his life could have taken turns in many different directions during these life-changing events. There is nothing to distinguish between the real and the imagined which makes for a beautiful and slightly confusing journey.
The events retold range from Brás' childhood to old age and introduce many characters that he has loved along the way.  It will have you thinking about your childhood friends, ex-lovers, parents and anyone else who made any sort of impact on you along the journey of life.
The ending summed up the jumble of ideas being presented throughout the book very wonderfully and quietly. I was confused for the first two chapters, wondering how everything would tie together or if there was any purpose to jumping around in time so drastically, but the longer I read it the more I was drawn into the story, or rather the ideas presented and the illustration of a life lived.
